What is New Zealand named after?

    The Dutch province of Zeeland

Why is it named New Zealand?

Discovered by a Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, territories were often named after places in the explorers' home countries. It's name was Nova Zeelandia.

Why is it spelled with an A and not an E?

During the 18th century, when the British Empire was expanding it was changed to follow a more angelical naming scheme. Thus becoming New Zealand.

Interesting Fact?

New Zealand is home to the longest place name in the world. The name is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu.
